It is funny to think about, but most people go through life thinking bigger is better until one day they realize that simplicity is the key to happiness. Of course, the same thing can be said about the Christmas season as well, consumers have the idea in their heads that they need bigger gifts, larger Christmas trees, and more food. They forget that the true meaning of Christmas is in the joy that people bring to each other just by taking the time to show that they care. It is not about the big artificial Christmas trees that are on display in the mall or the giant inflatable fixtures that fill up the neighbor’s front yard.
The entire larger is better Christmas complex begins in childhood when everything looks so much bigger to small children. The wonder and the magic of Christmas is so overwhelming and wonderful during those early years, that many people are forever trying to recapture that feeling later on in their lives. In order to do this, people go out and buy extravagant artificial Christmas trees and hundreds of yards of twinkling lights to decorate their homes with, in the hopes of bringing the magic back into their lives. Unfortunately for most people, the task of recapturing that moment will never be achievable, but they will have a great time trying.
The good news is that many adults recreate this joy for their children, and even though they are not experiencing it in the same way, they are now finding a new kind of Christmas magic that will replace their previous desire to recreate their memories. Instead, they will want to create hundreds of wonderful Christmas moments for their children. For instance, another magical Christmas moment is when parents take their children out to the woods for the first time after a snowstorm so that they are able to see all of the beautiful white Christmas trees and build their first snowman nestled safely underneath.
As people continue to get older and their children grow up and start families of their own, they are no longer in need of quite so many decorations or the larger Christmas trees. Instead, they are more practical, prefer simpler decorations that are easy to put up and take down, and are reusable year after year. Most elderly people still fully enjoy the Christmas season, but they have finally figured out that it is not because of the new eight-foot artificial Christmas trees that are hitting the market this year. It is because they are able to share in the magical moments that their children are now experiencing with their children.
What is truly amazing is that the original joy that a child first felt when witnessing the world after a snowstorm never goes away with age. Although throughout their lifetime they may come to appreciate the snow for different reasons, they will once again be enchanted by the beauty that a sea of white Christmas trees has to offer. The peaceful fresh look that the snow has on the world never fades over time, just overlooked.
